My first business lesson came at age 12, making change at a high school basketball game while helping with my dad’s side hustle. One angry customer and a math mistake later, I learned the hard way that people really pay attention to how you handle ‘their’ money. (I never made THAT mistake again!)

         But what I really learned from my dad went deeper. As a Lions Club member with a steady job, he showed me that side hustles weren’t just about extra cash – they could be vehicles for community impact. This became crystal clear when he and mom transformed her legendary cinnamon buns into a church fundraising phenomenon. What started as two dozen pans for an event  became a massive operation producing 325 pans for an annual event. As official taste-tester and kitchen assistant, I witnessed firsthand how a small venture could scale dramatically with the right product and systems.

         Fast forward to my first adult side hustle: a PC rental business in the early days of business computing. While others saw confusing technology, we saw opportunity. Companies needed flexible solutions and short term commitments.  On the back end, we discovered a way to fund capital outlays by partnering with investors seeking tax benefits. By creating the right business model, my partner and I built a profitable operation that required minimal time and capital. Twenty-two months later, we sold it for more than 10X our initial investment – proving that the right strategy could create significant value quickly.

         These experiences taught me priceless lessons about identifying opportunities, creating efficient systems, and scaling businesses…all while maintaining a full-time career.
